One of our closest ministry partners in providing food and clothing to the needy took their name from a similar inspiration to ours: Church in the Street. Every week this precious ministry provides warm meals for 400 men, women, and children from a cart pushed through the streets of downtown Recife.
I like to visit with the people who show up to get a cup of hot soup, bread, and coffee. This particular night I had the privelege of meeting Maria Isabel “A Bela dos Gatos” (Beauty of the Cats). She has a beautiful voice and shared a really special hymn.
She talked about how she likes to stay busy and helps an “elderly” neighbor (Isabel is only 70) get to her doctor’s appointments. Many who come for the hot meal are homeless, but some live in small shacks in the shanty towns that ring the city center.
Everyone receives a Bible tract and we pray and share the Gospel with any who are interested. You’d be amazed at how much faith and praise for God’s provision you find amongst those who seem to have so little.
All are deeply grateful just for some warm soup, bread and coffee or juice. We sometimes have toys for the kids. This particular night I was able to give away a couple of stuffed animals that had been Victoria’s. The brother and sister who received them were thrilled!
Thank you for making it possible for Jesus to take his church to his people on the streets of Recife, Brazil. I know he’s deeply grateful!
For the King!
